US military says it has launched new strikes on southern Iran

The Middle East edged closer to the brink again overnight, as the United States military confirmed it had launched fresh strikes against targets in southern Iran, hitting missile launch sites and naval vessels in what it described as an act of self-defence.

US Central Command, which oversees American military operations across the region, said the strikes were a direct response to Iranian aggression. The targeted sites included facilities used to launch ballistic missiles, along with a number of Iranian boats that commanders deemed an active threat to US forces and allied shipping in the area.

“These strikes were taken in self-defence,” Central Command said in its statement, leaving little room for diplomatic ambiguity about Washington’s intent.

It’s the latest escalation in a conflict that has been simmering for months, with Houthi attacks on Red Sea shipping, Iranian proxy activity across Iraq and Syria, and a broader regional tension that shows no sign of cooling. The strikes on Iranian soil, however, represent a significant step up.

Hitting targets inside Iran’s own borders carries a different political weight entirely. Previous US strikes in the region have largely targeted proxy forces in Yemen, Syria, and Iraq. Going after missile sites on Iranian territory signals that Washington is prepared to draw a much harder line.

Tehran has not yet issued a formal military response, though Iranian officials have in recent weeks repeatedly warned that any direct attack would be met with retaliation. Whether those warnings translate into action, or remain political theatre, is the question every analyst in the region is now asking.

Back in Britain, the Foreign Office said it was “monitoring the situation closely,” which in diplomatic language roughly translates to: we’re worried but haven’t decided what to say yet. The UK has forces operating in the region as part of allied maritime protection operations.

The strikes come at a moment when fragile ceasefire talks in Gaza are already under severe strain. Whether this latest move makes a broader regional deal easier or harder to achieve may well define the next chapter of an already exhausting conflict.
