Thousands may have died in UK’s exceptional May and June heatwaves

The sun felt glorious at the time. But the price of those scorching weeks in May and June may have been far higher than anyone realised while they were reaching for the sun cream.

An early estimate from health researchers suggests that more than 2,700 people in the UK died from heat-related causes during the two exceptional heatwaves that gripped the country this spring and early summer. That’s not a number to skim past.

The UK isn’t built for extreme heat. Our homes trap warmth rather than deflect it, our NHS is stretched thin at the best of times, and a significant portion of the population, particularly the elderly and those with underlying heart or respiratory conditions, are acutely vulnerable when temperatures spike for days on end.

Heat deaths are rarely dramatic. There’s no single moment, no obvious cause on a death certificate that reads “too hot.” Instead, the excess shows up weeks later in mortality statistics, a quiet, terrible accounting of how many more people died than would have done in a typical year.

“We tend to think of heatwaves as uncomfortable rather than deadly,” one public health specialist noted recently. “That perception is a problem. These events are a genuine public health emergency.”

The May heatwave pushed temperatures well above seasonal norms across large parts of England and Wales. June followed with little respite. For people in poorly ventilated flats, care homes without air conditioning, or those simply living alone with no one to check in, the weeks were dangerous in a way the weather forecast couldn’t quite convey.

It’s worth remembering that 2,700 is an estimate, and the final figure could shift as data is refined. But it’s consistent with patterns seen during previous events, including the notorious summer of 2022, when the UK recorded its first ever 40-degree day and excess deaths ran into the thousands.

Climate scientists have been clear that summers like this are becoming more frequent, not less. The question now is whether Britain’s public health infrastructure, housing stock, and emergency planning will actually catch up before the next one arrives.
