Zayn Malik almost hit in the head as water bottles are hurled at him at London event

It was supposed to be a celebratory night, but things turned ugly fast when fans at a London event began hurling water bottles in the direction of Zayn Malik, with at least one coming dangerously close to striking him on the head.

The former One Direction singer was making a public appearance in the capital when the incident unfolded, leaving onlookers stunned and security scrambling to restore order. It’s the kind of scene you’d expect nobody in the room had anticipated when the evening began.

Footage circulating on social media showed bottles being thrown from within the crowd, with Zayn visibly reacting as one narrowly missed him. The clips spread quickly, drawing a mix of shock and outrage from fans online, many of whom condemned the behaviour in no uncertain terms.

“There’s absolutely no excuse for throwing anything at a performer,” one attendee wrote on X, echoing a sentiment that dominated the replies. “It doesn’t matter how you feel, that’s just dangerous.”

Zayn, 31, has had a complicated relationship with live appearances over the years, having famously pulled out of festivals and cancelled tours in the past citing anxiety. Events like this do precious little to make the prospect of public performance feel any safer or more appealing.

The bottle-throwing trend has been a recurring and deeply troubling feature of live events over the past couple of years. Bebe Rexha required stitches after being struck in the face by a phone thrown during a concert in New York back in 2023. Pink, Harry Styles and Kelsea Ballerini have all dealt with objects being lobbed at them on stage.

What was once an extreme rarity has started to feel, uncomfortably, like it’s becoming normalised. Security teams at venues across the country are now reportedly reviewing protocols specifically around crowd behaviour and projectiles.

Nobody was reported injured in last night’s incident, and Zayn has not yet publicly commented on what happened. His team has not issued a statement at the time of writing.

The real question now is whether venues and event organisers will start taking more proactive steps to address this, or whether artists will simply begin factoring it in as an occupational hazard. Neither option is a particularly comfortable place to land.
